On May 18, 2012 the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Macau, held at the Speakers Hall the Inauguration Rites for the New Rector and other members of the administration. Taking into account the fact that USJ is, under the Catholic University of Portugal, a Pontifical University, the appointment of the new Rector Magnificus Fr. Peter Damian Francis Stilwell was issued by the Magnum Chancellor of the Catholic University of Portugal and Cardinal D. José da Cruz Policarpo for a four-year mandate. The Bishop of Macao, the Most Rev. D. José Lai, appointed the USJ new Vice-Rector, in the person of Professor Anna Chan, and the new Administrator, Mr. Victor Manuel Kuan. Fr. Stilwell succeeds Dr. Ruben Cabral as USJ Rector.

In his simple and brief inaugural address, the new Rector spoke of the need to have a clear Mission Statement which will address the USJ service to the Diocese and to the society of Macau within a global context. In the first months (the new Rector arrived from Portugal on May 2, 2012), Fr. Stilwell will meet all the components of the university, that is, the teaching and administrative staff and the students. His first practical priority will be the continuation of the work in the new USJ Campus. This huge task involves raising the needed funds, a difficult but possible endeavor: “Where there is a will, there is a way,” he said. Earlier, in a meeting with the USJ teaching staff, the new Rector presented other priorities, including the academic quality of teaching, the Catholic identity of the university, and the development of consensus as the way of governing. After becoming fully acquainted with the different units of the Catholic University of Macau, the new Rector will present to the USJ constituents a more concrete program of action for the next months and years.

Before becoming the new Rector, Fr. Stillwell was a visiting professor at the USJ School of Christian Studies, Dean of Theology and Vice-Rector of the Catholic University of Portugal. The simple Inauguration Rites, ably presented and directed by Ricardo Rato, USJ Registrar, closed with these words of Fr. Stillwell: “Thank you to all and God bless you.”

We, the Dominicans of Our Lady of the Rosary Province wish well to the USJ new administration, commit ourselves as much as possible to contribute to its dynamic development, and pray for its continuing success. By the way, in school year 2011-2012, nineteen (19) simply professed brothers are taking their theological studies and six (6) friars from our Province are teaching at the USJ School of Christian Studies.
